We want to recognize and warmly thank Dr. Eric J. Smith for the contribution he has made to AVID in his past 4 years as a board member. A passionate educator and advocate for students throughout his career, Dr. Smith officially resigned his position from the AVID Board of Directors this past week.
Before joining AVID, Eric was previously the Florida Education Commissioner and formerly served as an adviser to the George W. Bush Institute’s Advancing Accountability program. Dr. Smith also served as Senior Vice President for College Readiness at the College Board and is a member emeritus of Chiefs for Change.
Eric began his career in Florida as a classroom teacher, advancing to several administrative positions in Florida school districts and eventually serving 16 years as a superintendent in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland.
Always a strong supporter of AVID’s mission, Eric brought excellent perspectives to our organization. His commitment to students and educators both at AVID and in his other work across the country deserves our respect and gratitude. We warmly send our best as he leaves us in this role. Thank you, Eric.
